On February 7,2017.
Today, I studied seminar in English Language Teaching with Asst. Prof. Dr.Usa Noytim. Last week, teacher assigned each group discussed with topic about the role of English Language Education in Asian Context. This article surveys the history of English and the role of English Language Education in Asian Country: Singapore, Philippines, Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, Taiwan, Japan, and Korea. The first, in Singapore, has launched a bilingual education policy with an ever increasing emphasis on the use of English. SSE or Singapore Standard English is officially learned at schools and it is not differences from a Standard English. On the other hand, SCE or Singapore Colloquial English is learned and used in vernacular situations. The second, in Philippines, is large English-speaking population and education program declared that the vernacular be the medium of instruction for all of levels. English was used as the medium in elementary and high school. The third,in Hong Kong, the Chinese language began to be used as an official medium of education along with English. The fourth, in China, English was taught in missionary schools in South China and the first schools that taught English were established in Macau in the late 1830s. The fifth, in Malaysia,English was a compulsory subject for all students from primary school, it was only taught as a subject. The sixth, in Taiwan, foreign language education would begin in secondary school education. The seventh, in Japan, English had replaced Dutch as the main foreign language in Japan and teaching English through native speakers and the other one is to teach English-Japanese translation by Japanese teacher and the last in Korea, can be categorized into two groups by the institutes and missionary school.During the 1950's,use grammar translation and emphasis the ability to understand the cultures of various foreign countries. During the 1960's, emphasis the speaking and listening ability of English and using the audio-lingual method of language teaching with the added goal of introduction Korean culture to other countries and during the 1970's emphasis the communicative ability and grammar-translation method and focus on teaching English through the audio-visual material.
I think this lesson is easy because teacher assigned to translate this article or contents before and after that I discuss and share idea to other so I have chance and got knowledge more than I have.
This lesson isn't difficultly because these information are easy and then I read just 1-2 round, I can get it. I reviewed before I study so I understand.
Although this lesson is easy, but I tried to read more and find keywords in each topic and highlight them. It helps to understand more and I asked my friend about some information which I didn't understand.
